Delicately Indestructible

I only recently learned about the existence of Prince Rupert’s Drops. Probably because my science knowledge stops at Biology, and Physics tends to vex me (something my college Physics professor would attest to). Prince Rupert Drops are strange little marvels that form when molten glass is dripped into cold water, cooling them so quickly they solidify from the outside in. What makes them fascinating is their contradiction. The bulbous head is incredibly strong due to intense internal compression. So strong in fact, it can withstand hammer blows and even bullets. Nearly indestructible. But the thin tail? It’s remarkably fragile. Snap it, and the entire drop explodes into dust in an instant.

Mechanical engineer Destin Sandlin explored this on his YouTube channel, Smarter Every Day, alongside glass artist Cal Breed. They experimented with capturing the explosion by forming the drops inside molten glass and cutting the tails within the confines of that molten environment. The drops still shattered, but the surrounding liquid glass held the structure in place by filling the fractures and freezing the explosion mid-destruction. Even the invisible paths of energy became visible. Their resulting creations are stunning—the intersection of science and art, designed by THE Creator Himself.

Like the head of the Prince Rupert drop, the human spirit can withstand intense force. It is resilient and incredibly strong… until it isn’t. When our spirits are impacted in their most delicate parts, the illusion of strength is wiped out in an instant. Suddenly, everything fractures, and we are incapable of putting the pieces back together.

But God. Psalm 147:3 tells us, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Where we shatter, He restores. More completely than molten glass filling broken space, He meets us in our weakest places and makes us whole again, binding us and repairing what’s broken within us. Bring your brokenness to the Father. What looks like the end to you and I can once again become strong and whole when we’re held together in Him.
