The movie Knives Out depicts the death of a wealthy man and the relationships between him, his over-indulged, poorly-behaved offspring, and his humble nurse. The family loses its every-loving mind when the man’s will pronounces his caregiver as the sole heir of his fortune. By the way, that’s not a spoiler for those of you who are four years behind on your mystery/crime flicks.
The Word of God tells us repeatedly that if we know Him, we are His chosen, adopted children, guaranteed an inheritance we cannot earn. (check Ephesians 1 if you think I’m over-paraphrasing). It also says the Creator of the universe LAVISHES his redemption, grace, blessing, wisdom, and love upon his children!
Lavish is an underused word, in my opinion, that means sumptuously rich, elaborate, and luxurious. That’s the kind of inheritance the Thrombey family was anticipating in Knives Out, and it’s the exact kind of inheritance that Hollywood has been bestowing on down-and-out characters for decades. Who wouldn’t like a chance at immense wealth we didn’t have to earn? Nevermind that inheritances come at the expense of someone’s life.
My lavish inheritance cost Christ his life, so I should be more careful not to squander it. The “sumptuously rich, elaborate, and luxurious” redemption, grace, blessing, wisdom, and love that comes from being His chosen child is an inheritance that won’t be taken away because of my over-indulgent and poor behavior, and for that I am eternally grateful.
