One time I heard a lady on the radio talking about cleaning and organization who said, “Productive people get up in the morning and get dressed, two shoes right away.”
That seemed a bit basic. Who gets dressed with one shoe? Perhaps home organization is the least of that guy’s worries. Then I read the radio guest’s blog, and she wasn’t suggesting people get dressed, two shoes (although this really should always be the case), she was saying to shoes! As in, put on your clothes and your shoes instead of padding around the house in bare feet like you have no plans for the day.
That’s sensible advice. Working from home, I accomplish plenty in my pajamas, but I’m not dropping that letter in the mailbox or sweeping my porch where the whole neighborhood can see me like that. I put off the chores that require being seen. When I’m dressed and wearing two shoes, I’m less inclined to put off what needs to be done.
The Bible tells us to be prepared to do spiritual battle by putting on the full armor of God, with our feet “fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace” (two shoes!) and to be prepared to give a testimony about the hope we have in Christ (Ephesians 6:15, 1 Peter 3:15).
It’s easy to get caught off guard. If you drop by my house, you’re going to have to kick dog toys out of the way and ignore the unfolded laundry. If I know you’re coming, I’ll have prepared for your arrival better.
Jesus tells us he’s coming back and to be ready. Put on both your shoes and be productive in your faith. Be His hands and feet, give a testimony about your hope and joy, and be prepared so when the time comes, He doesn’t catch us sitting around thinking about maybe getting up and getting ready to do stuff.
